A Study in Contrast
In my life I've been lucky enough to date a few wonderful women, but Deana and Ellyn had much more impact on my life than the rest. I was with both for just over two and a half years each. Deana was a Missouri girl, born and raised in a small town outside Springfield. Ellyn, on the other hand, was a Filipina who had spent most of her life in her native country and had immigrated to the US just a few years before I met her. Other than their common gender and a few shared physical attributes, Deana and Ellyn were as different as the sun and the moon, having different looks, styles and personalities.
Deana was like the sun - the light of my life. I first met her in an elevator shortly after moving to sunny Orlando, Florida. I was immediately captivated by her beauty. She was everything that I found appealing in a woman. She had large brown eyes. Her mouth was small but she had tantalizing full lips. Her long, honey blond hair was in a simple French braid down her back. Deana was tall and had impossibly long, athletic legs. But she impressed me with her poise even more so than with her physical attractiveness. She had a self-assured, calm aura about her. When she spoke, my heart somersaulted in my chest. At that moment, I knew I was going to enjoy Orlando.
If Deana was the sun to me, Ellyn was the moon. When I first met her I admired her loveliness, but was not immediately captivated as I was with Deana. Ellyn too had all the physical characteristics I found attractive - exotic large, deep brown eyes, small mouth, graceful neck, beautiful hands, exquisite breasts, incredible posterior, and a petite, athletic body. For about three months we did little more than exchange pleasantries. In fact, at the time I was somewhat infatuated with her best friend, Kathy, who was the type that casually flaunted her sexuality. As time wore on Ellyn and I began spending more and more time together, at first just as friends. But Cupid eventually worked his magic and the friendship grew into something else.
Deana enjoyed the power over men her looks gave her and she took full advantage of it. She had a preference for tailored suits, tiny dresses, thigh high stockings, expensive lingerie, and very high heels. The outfits she wore to the gym were almost obscene. Deana was like a chameleon, changing her appearance and style almost weekly. I dreaded seeing her walk through the door with a new fashion magazine - that was a definite signal of upcoming change. Don't get me wrong. I enjoyed the fact that she did not become complacent and kept the relationship fresh by introducing these changes and maintaining her desirable appearance. However, sometimes her changes were a little extreme.
The outward image that Ellyn presented was more subtle, but no less effective. She too preferred a provocative appearance, but she was less obvious. When first we met she dressed somewhat conservatively, reflecting her traditional upbringing in the Philippines. As time passed she began dressing in a more western style. She gravitated towards clothes that showcased her superb physique such as tight blouses, backless shirts, short skirts and bare legs. On others, this might have looked cheap but on Ellyn the overall impression was definitely sexy but not at all in poor taste. Heads turned wherever she went.
Deana was outgoing, outspoken, and free spirited. She tried not just to live life, but to truly experience every moment. Her exuberance was contagious; when she was up people crowded around her like moths to a light, desperate to share in her happiness. She had an inclination to silliness; raising peoples' spirits and making them laugh was second nature for her. She truly thrived on being the center of attention. However, she could not keep up this almost manic happiness for long and often she would crash. At these times her sorrow and despair were heartrending. She would do nothing but drive around for hours in her car, just listening to music and thinking.
Ellyn's personality was poles apart from Deana's. Outwardly she was the epitome of the commonly held stereotype of Asian women - quiet, submissive, respectful, shy. Indeed, she was all that and more. She loved her family. She loved her friends. She loved her culture. She was extremely generous with herself, her time, and anything else she had to give. She was also entirely honest and very responsible. She seemed the very definition of goodness. In fact, if one was to find any fault with her personality, it was that she was perhaps too willing to please, or maybe that she often kept her negative emotions bottled up inside. Although she was not as outgoing as Deana, Ellyn had a close knit group of true friends that she really enjoyed spending time with. Neither was she as exuberantly happy as Deana, but she did not experience Deana's lows either. She seemed quite content with her life in an almost Zen kind of way.
Although Deana and Ellyn were nearly opposite in every way, I loved them both dearly and equally. I learned much from both of them. How wonderful it would be if one were able to take the best of both and have none of the negative!
